What to do in Punta Arenas

The search this page answers: punta arenas things to do(140 searches a month, United States, measured 2026-10-28)

The short answer

Ranked by the time each thing takes out of your day: half an hour for the historic centre, the plaza and the pier; two hours for the museum, the cemetery and the Húsares tower; four and a half hours for Fuerte Bulnes; five or six for the penguin islands of Magdalena; twelve for the full navigation of the Strait at US$ 365. If you have one free half-day, take the fort, and if you have one free full day, take the penguins.

Half an hour: the historic centre, the plaza and the pier

The centre climbs a low hill behind the waterfront, and everything in this section is within a ten-minute walk of the port. Start at the pier, walk up to Plaza Muñoz Gamero, and stop at the monument to the discoverers on the square. That walk is the whole thing: the city in half an hour, and it costs nothing.

Add twenty minutes if the weather is clear and go down to the shore instead of stopping at the plaza. The light on the Strait in the evening is the reason people end up photographing this town from the water rather than from the middle of it.

Time: about 30 minutes. Cost: nothing. No separate ticket and no tour listing needed.

Two hours: the museum, the cemetery and the Torreón del Húsares

The Museo Regional de Magallanes is the single best hour in the city. It sits in the former mansion of the Sara Braun family, the Palacio Sara Braun, which was also the seat of the regional government, and its collection is the region's maritime history, built on the shipwrecks and the maritime trade that the town itself was founded on. If you have been on a boat trip in the region, this is where the stories behind it are.

The Cementerio Municipal, up the hill behind the centre, holds the graves of the city's founders and the hikeos, the local name for the memorials that record the early dead, a set going back to 1880. The Torreón del Húsares stands on the waterfront by the old port, and it is the quickest of the three: ten minutes from the pier, with the town and the water in the same frame.

Time: about 2 hours for the museum and the cemetery together. Cost: the museum charges its own admission and we have not measured the price, so check it at the door; the cemetery and the tower are free.

Half a day: Fuerte Bulnes, and the walk to the San Isidro lighthouse

Fuerte Bulnes, 4.5 hours, US$ 55

The fort founded by the Chilean schooner Ancud on 25 May 1843, the first permanent settlement on the Strait, reached overland from the city with a stop at Puerto del Hambre on the way back. This is the cheapest way onto the water with a guide, and the shortest commitment of the twelve tours in our catalog.

Be honest about what the day is: the fort itself takes about 40 minutes to walk. The value is the drive out along the shore, the water, and the return leg past Puerto del Hambre. It also includes hotel pickup, which matters if you are staying outside the centre.

Fort Bulnes Historical Tour, US$ 55 for 4.5 hours in a small group, rated 5.0 on 1 review, price checked 2026-10-28. The rating on that listing rests on a single review, so treat it as a thin measurement rather than a strong one.

There is a longer version at US$ 105 for 6 hours that adds a guided walk along the shore and lunch, at 5.0 on 1 review. It is worth the extra US$ 50 only if you have not done the short one already: the Fuerte Bulnes Premium tour, price checked 2026-10-28.

The San Isidro lighthouse, on foot

The San Isidro lighthouse sits at the end of the continent on the coast road south of the city, and it is the walk people do when they have a free half-day and no intention of paying for a boat. It is the same destination that the guided versions are sold as, and those are listed at 8 hours with pickup in the same catalogs we price from (GetYourGuide Punta Arenas catalog l32360, checked 2026-10-28).

Walking it takes most of a day once you are off the coast road, so treat it as a full-day commitment rather than a two-hour one, and plan the transport back. There is no listing for it in our catalog, so we give you no price for it: the guided versions are quoted separately by the operators.

Time: 8 hours for the guided version listed in the same catalog. Cost: not measured by us, so we do not quote one. The 70 monthly searches for this landmark in the United States (measured 2026-10-28) suggest it is more in demand than our catalog records.

A full day: the penguin islands, and the king penguins

Magdalena Island, 5 or 6 hours

A boat crossing of the Strait to Magdalena Island, where you land among a Magellanic penguin colony and walk with the birds. The 6-hour trip at US$ 170 is the most reviewed product in our whole catalog, at 4.5 across 272 reviews; the 5-hour version at US$ 160 carries 4.7 across 73 reviews (prices checked 2026-10-28).

Read those two ratings carefully. The 4.7 is higher, but it rests on about a quarter of the review count, so this is the same trip rather than a better one. The 272-review figure is the one that tells you the operator has been running this for years.

Boat Trip to Magdalena Island and Walk with Penguins — 6 hours, US$ 170, 4.5 out of 5 across 272 reviews, price checked 2026-10-28. The 5-hour alternative is the Magdalena Island Penguin Tour by Boat, US$ 160, 4.7 across 73 reviews.

Time: 5 or 6 hours. Cost: US$ 160 or US$ 170, checked 2026-10-28. Neither includes lunch.

Tierra del Fuego and king penguins, 15 hours

The long one. This trip goes to Isla Dawson for the king penguin colony and into the Tierra del Fuego national park, and it runs 15 hours. That figure is not a figure of speech: read it as two days compressed into one. It is the only tour in our catalog that reaches king penguins, and it is the only one that should not be attempted on the day a flight leaves.

Full-Day King Penguins and Tierra del Fuego Tour, US$ 130, 4.7 out of 5 across 66 reviews, price checked 2026-10-28. Hotel pickup and the national park entry fees are included; lunch is not.

Time: 15 hours. Cost: US$ 130, checked 2026-10-28. Not a good idea with a flight the next morning.

The expensive one: the full navigation, 12 hours, US$ 365

This is the trip that runs the length of the Strait: from the Atlantic Mouth, through the narrows at Cape Froward and the two angosturas, along the whale route and the glacier fronts, to the Pacific end. It is 12 hours, lunch is included, and it is the most expensive thing in our catalog at US$ 365 (price checked 2026-10-28).

Full-Day Whales and Glaciers Tour, US$ 365, 4.5 out of 5 across 272 reviews, price checked 2026-10-28. The 272 reviews are shared with the Magdalena boat trip, which suggests the same operator and the same guide team.

The honest case for it: if you have one long free day and you want to see the whole Strait at once, nothing else in the catalog does that. The honest case against: US$ 365 is four times the price of the fort trip, and on a bad-weather day you are on the water for 12 hours instead.

What not to do when you have little time

Three mistakes account for most of the disappointed trips to this city.

  • Do not spend your only full day on a cruise shore excursion. The excursions sold on board run on the ship's timetable and include entry fees you would otherwise pay once, not twice. If you are not on a cruise, the shore trips from the harbour are cheaper and they leave you free for the evening. Save the boat for the day your ship is not leaving.
  • Do not book the 15-hour Tierra del Fuego day before your flight. It runs 15 hours and it can end late. It is the one trip in the catalog that is genuinely a two-day commitment wearing a one-day label, and it belongs in the middle of your stay, never at the end.
  • Do not plan Torres del Paine from here. The park is 250 km away and the tours for it leave from Puerto Natales, 247 km up the coast. Trying to do the park and the Strait on the same day is how people end up spending a whole day in a minibus.

If you have three days in total, the order that works is: day one the fort, day two the penguins, day three the full navigation. If you have four, add Torres del Paine from Puerto Natales on the last day and take the Base Torres trek, which is the best-reviewed trip in the region at 4.8 across 942 reviews.
